Why rent a mailbox from Mailboxes of Iowa City?
- You get a physical street address rather than just a P.O. Box number. This allows you to receive items from private carriers such as UPS, FedEx and DHL along with your regular mail. This is not available through the Post Office.

- You can keep one mailing and shipping address while you live in Iowa City, no matter how many times you move. This is great for students who change apartments every year.
- We will always be available during delivery hours to sign for any packages that you may receive, which means that your packages will not be left outside or not delivered that day. Your high value deliveries will be safe and you will not have to drive to the shipping depot or post office to pick up your packages. This is not available through the Post Office.
- We are open every day that the carriers deliver and are open until 6:00 pm Monday through Friday and 10:00 am to 2:00 pm on Saturday for your convenience. This is not available through the Post Office.
- We offer mail forwarding for you by the week, month or on demand. We can forward to multiple locations through your choice of carriers. We can also hold your mail while you are out of town or traveling. This is not available through the Post Office.
- We offer e-mail, text and phone in mail check which allows you to save time by having us check your mailbox for any deliveries or automatically notify you of package deliveries. This is not available through the Post Office.
- You can check our home page daily to see if mail has been slotted for the day. This is not available through the Post Office.
- Free Parking. This is not available through the Post Office.
- We are a full service shipping, mailing and packaging store. This is not available through the Post Office.

We are a licensed CMRA (Commercial Mail Receiving Agency) by the United States Postal Service since 1988.
We require a 3 month rental minimum and a $5.00 set up/key fee when opening a mailbox. A Mailboxes of Iowa City Rental application and a USPS form 1583 need to be filled out prior to opening a mailbox. These forms are available at the bottom of this page. The United States Postal Service requires two forms of ID. No mailbox will be opened unless the customer fills out these two applications and has proper identification based on the United States Postal Service’s guidelines listed below.
Acceptable Forms of Identification for the United States Postal Service Form 1583
CMRA's and their customers must present two forms of identification, one with a photograph. Social Security cards, credit cards, and birth certificates are NOT acceptable forms of identification. Following are examples of acceptable forms of identification:
- Valid driver's license or non-driver's license state ID
- Armed Forces ID
- Government ID
- University ID
- Recognized corporate ID
- Passport
- Alien registration card
- Current lease, mortgage or deed
- Voter registration card
- Utility bill
- Home or vehicle insurance policy
- Vehicle registration card
The identification presented must confirm that the applicant is who he or she claims to be. By verifying identification, the Postal Service will protect against delivering mail without verifiable consent of the actual addressee.
